Imagine you are in a large office. You want to meet your colleague Rohan who sits on the same floor. You know his name, but you don’t know his desk number. Without his desk number, you cannot meet him.
This is exactly what happens inside a computer network.
So how does your computer find the MAC address of the destination computer?
That’s where ARP becomes a hero.
ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) is a network protocol used to find the MAC address of a device when only the IP address is of that device is known
In Short ARP helps in getting the MAC Address
Let's try to understand ARP using a example
To communicate with 192.168.1.2
Your PC needs the MAC Address of 192.168.1.2
Which Means Your computer asks: “Who has IP 192.168.1.2? Tell me your MAC address.”
The computer that has the IP 192.168.1.2 will reply, “I am 192.168.1.2, and my MAC is AA-BB-CC-DD-EE-FF.”
ARP helps a computer find the MAC address of a device when it only knows the IP address.
A broadcast message asking:
“Who has this IP address?”
A response from the device that owns the IP address, containing its MAC address.
