To understand VLAN in better way first we will understand What is LAN
A LAN is a group of devices connected to each other within a small area such as:
Devices in LAN include:
Imagine a company with multiple departments:
In a LAN, all these department computers are connected to the same network, creating a single broadcast domain.
A broadcast domain means:
If one computer sends a broadcast packet, every computer in that LAN receives it.
This is not secure at all.
Instead of putting all department computers in one network (LAN), we create multiple smaller networks called VLANs.
A VLAN allows us to divide one big LAN into multiple smaller LANs.
We do this:
Even though the devices are connected to the same switch, VLANs logically divide them.
Devices in one VLAN cannot access devices in another VLAN.
Example: An IT VLAN computer cannot access a Sales VLAN computer unless allowed.
Broadcast packets remain within their own VLAN and are not forwarded to other VLANs.
This reduces broadcast traffic and improves network performance.

All students sit in one big hall.

This is precisely how a network without VLANs behaves.
Now imagine the school has separate rooms:
