⭐ What is VLAN (Virtual LAN)?

A VLAN divides one big network into multiple small networks to reduce broadcast traffic and improve security.

To understand VLAN in better way first we will understand What is LAN


🖥️ What is LAN (Local Area Network)?

A LAN is a group of devices connected to each other within a small area such as:

  • same room
  • same building
  • same office
  • same campus

Devices in LAN include:

  • Computer
  • Printer
  • Servers
  • CCTV Camera etc


🏢 Example of LAN

Imagine a company with multiple departments:

  • Sales Department
  • IT Department
  • Finance Department

In a LAN, all these department computers are connected to the same network, creating a single broadcast domain.


🔄 What is a Broadcast Domain?

A broadcast domain means:

If one computer sends a broadcast packet, every computer in that LAN receives it.


⚠️ Problems in a Single LAN

No Security

  • Sales Dept Computers can access Finance Dept Computers
  • Finance Dept Computers can access IT Dept Computers

This is not secure at all.

Too Much Broadcast Traffic

  • Every broadcast packet reaches every device
  • More devices = More broadcasts
  • The network becomes slow


📌 Summary of the Problem

  • In a single LAN Computer generates lots of broadcast traffic, which slows the  network
  • Any Dept computer can access another computer → zero security


🟧 Solution → VLAN (Virtual LAN)

Instead of putting all department computers in one network (LAN), we create multiple smaller networks called VLANs.

A VLAN allows us to divide one big LAN into multiple smaller LANs.

We do this:

  • Create one VLAN for each department
  • Put the IT department computers in the IT VLAN
  • Put Sales computers in the Sales VLAN
  • Put Finance computers in the Finance VLAN

Even though the devices are connected to the same switch, VLANs logically divide them.

🔐 1. Security

Devices in one VLAN cannot access devices in another VLAN.

Example: An IT VLAN computer cannot access a Sales VLAN computer unless allowed.

📉 2. Broadcast Control

Broadcast packets remain within their own VLAN and are not forwarded to other VLANs.

  • IT VLAN broadcast stays in IT VLAN
  • Sales VLAN broadcast stays in Sales VLAN

This reduces broadcast traffic and improves network performance.

🏫 School Without Classrooms (No VLAN)

Imagine a school where:

  • 1st standard
  • 2nd standard
  • 3rd standard

All students sit in one big hall.

What will happen?

  • Everyone makes noise
  • Students hear lessons meant for other classes
  • Total chaos everywhere

This is precisely how a network without VLANs behaves.


🏫 School With Proper Classrooms (With VLAN)

Now imagine the school has separate rooms:

  • 1st Standard → Room 1
  • 2nd Standard → Room 2
  • 3rd Standard → Room 3

What happens now?

  • The system is organised
  • Students stay in their group
  • Noise stays inside the class

✔ Each Classroom = One VLAN

  • 1st standard kids cannot walk into 3rd standard class → Prevents unwanted access (Security)
  • Noise stays inside the classroom → Reduces broadcast traffic
